Channel Earrings: No Longer Just For Moms
Have you peeped into your mom's jewelry box lately? Chances are you will find a pair or two of classy earrings that look like small hoops. You may not see it at first but if you observe an earring closely, it is akin to a hinge hoop design - there is a section there where a very thin link can be found. This link serves as a "connection" between that section of the earring to the other section of the earring. Sounds confusing? Actually, channel earrings are notorious for being the "confusing" yet interesting kind of earrings --- the kind that you can't easily put on, the kind that one knows would be "safe to wear" (will not grab too much attention but will not go unnoticed as well) yet isn't exactly on top of an on-the-go person's list. Channel earrings are also known as "the mom's favorite" most probably because they look timeless, formal yet classy and has a "looks good on adults" image and reputation. It quietly speaks of elegance and grace. Queen Elizabeth, for instance, often wears gold channel earrings with diamond trimmings. More often than not, channel earrings are worn during formal occasions and business-related activities. The design also allows the earring to fit in back snugly on the ear for a tight, secure fit. Unlike the big, chunky hoop earrings and funky chandelier earrings that younger people and celebrities seem to prefer nowadays, channel earrings have remained to stay away from the limelight, so to speak. However, that may change in the very near future.
New jewelry designers are now beginning to take a step backwards and giving this earring design another inspired look. Apparently, they have seen the potential and they know the possibilities are endless. Gone are the days that channel earrings should stick to the basics --- gold or silver finish, diamond, with no other or very little details preferably made from hard stones that belong to the upper tiers (rubies, emeralds, aquamarines) and always utterly strict and formal look. These designers, most of whom are hip and young and full of ideas, are hoping to come up with more appealing designs hopefully without increasing the cost of each pair --- using crystals, peridot, topaz, quartz, freshwater pearls, citrine or black and gray stones perhaps? These new possibilities truly pose a brighter future for industries engaged in precious and semi-precious stones as they usually depend on jewelry designers who are more inclined to studs, hoops and chandeliers. Moreover, the "re-invention" of channel earrings may now also successfully tap the younger market. Indeed, a promising future lies ahead! Expect better, dramatic and more beautiful twists to your mom's favorite channel earrings. Who knows, it might soon be your favorite as well. |
