Search for diamond earrings online and you'll find yourself reading an article or two about the precious accessories and a little bit of scandal and interesting trivia involving these valuables here and there. Considered to still be among the top preferred gifts for any occasion, diamond earrings may yet be the most mentioned and arguably the most infamous expensive pieces of jewelry ever to grace the pages of print media, radio airwaves, television shows and online media outlets.

For one, even the White House wasn't spared from "diamond earring controversies". Former President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary were reportedly given $12,000-worth of gold and diamond necklaces, bracelets and yes, earrings. The pricey presents were allegedly from Palestinian official Yasser Arafat, who was highly criticized by global leaders for violence at the Mideast. Reportedly, the Clinton couple turned the gifts over to the U.S. National Archives, along with other tokens from world leaders. Knowing how document-backed investigative reports could ruin one's political career in a split of a second, it most probably was a good move on the part of the Clintons.

What was not a good move, though, was Lucyna Turyk-Wawrynowicz's stealing from celebrities. Turyk-Wawrynowicz, a housekeeper, was found guilty to have stolen a pair of diamond earrings which belonged to actor Robert De Niro's wife, Grace Hightower. The earrings were reportedly worth a whopping $95,500. De Niro isn't the only victim, though. Turyk-Wawrynowicz reportedly also pled guilty to have robbed veteran actress Candice Bergen of "Murphy Brown" fame.

The most expensive diamond earrings also got media exposure. And how can it not grab attention when its price tag is a cool $8.5 Million? Jeweler to the stars Harry Winston, famous for lending out beautiful pieces of jewelry to celebrities in most Hollywood activities including the Oscars, created the pear-shaped earrings. The diamonds were in a platinum setting and boasted a total of 60.1 carats.

An extraordinary diamond earring purchase in 2005, meanwhile, boosted not only the ordinary consumers' confidence in online portals but in the online gem industry as well. Popular site Amazon announced last December 23, 2005 that a buyer bought diamond earrings worth $94,000. It was the site's most lucrative deal for the year. The earrings bragged of two 2.5 carat yellow diamonds and two 1-carat white diamonds, set in platinum and 18 karat yellow gold. The drop diamonds had a total weight of 8.34 carats. Indeed, the earrings made someone brimming with happiness and pride! Amazon also announced that they also sealed a couple of deals with buyers of diamond stud earrings.

Gem aficionados, jewelers and even males on the lookout for that perfect gift for their lady loves all agree: they may be mentioned in the news for good reasons and sometimes with a little controversy but diamond earrings are still and will always be among the favored presents or purchases for any occasion.
